Gonny van Hulst

Country: United Kingdom
Date of birth: 1965
Tags: urban glass artist, inventive mixed media, kiln-casting, contemporary glass, glassblowing, glassblower, street art, Art.Fair, London

Gonny van Hulst was born in the Netherlands and moved to London 10 years ago where she now lives and works. Trained in traditional glassmaking techniques and her fascination with street art culture and its context within the urban environment, she developed a distinctly unique style. As an ‘urban glass artist’ she strives to bridge a gap between contemporary glass and street art, drawing her inspiration from city life and urban decay and seeks to bring beauty to things that we might find flawed or broken to create work that is thought-provoking and dynamic, at times with a sense of humour.

Her originality and observations allow her to experiment with kiln-cast glass combined with a variety of other materials and processes, such as wood, spray-paint, found objects and inventive media, in a different and radical way. For Gonny, glass holds an unlimited amount of conceptual potential and the crafting process can have a direct reference to her unconventional background and life experiences.

Like life itself, I find glass demanding. When I push it to its limits, glass can be extremely challenging to work with. It is this struggle to control its technical complexity, its contradictory qualities and sometimes unpredictability that I am strongly drawn to.” - Gonny
